Patterns of Regeneration: Urban Renaissance Policy Implications on Japanese State Housing Estates. Evidence from the Tokyo Metropolitan Area

Since 2019 the cooperative project between the Department of Social Systems and Management at the University of Tsukuba and the Junior Professorship for Sustainable Housing Development has been investigating strategies for dealing with state-owned housing stocks of the second half of the 20th century. For this purpose, data sets from the Urban Renaissance Agency on the public housing stock in the Kanto region (Tokyo) were evaluated on site from August to September 2019. The results of the study, which point to a strong consolidation of the stock under neo-liberal policies and the conditions of demographic and economic change, show a regional and stock-related diversification of the previously monotypic stock. The findings should help to understand and design better the role of public actors in post-industrial societies.
